How to Drill a Hole in a Wine Bottle

Important:  You should always wear safety glasses when using your drill motor you may also want to put on a shop apron as some water may be splashing around as you drill.

There is a learning curve to drilling holes in glass wine bottles. You may want to practice a few times drilling holes in old beer or pickle bottles, especially if you are just learning to use diamond drill bits. It will take a few tries to get the feel and touch. The amount of downward pressure and drilling speed you apply when drilling wine bottles is very important.

What size hole?  I have found that a 5/8 inch diameter hole will work just fine. I sell many ½” inch to bottle drillers as well.  The 5/8 inch hole makes just a little easier to insert your string of Christmas lights.  Whether you choose to go with a ½ inch or 5/8 inch hole you will need to purchase a diamond drill bit also known as a hole saw. Do not waste your money buying carbide coated drill bits or the spade shaped bits that are advertised to drill in glass. I have tried these types of diamond drill bits when I first starting drilling wine bottles. I did not have good luck with any of them. This brings us to another point.  Diamond coated drill bits/holesaws do wear out. The life of the holesaw –diamond drill bits depend on several factors. The thickness of the glass you are drilling, the drill speed and amount of pressure applied and lubrication. You need to keep checking the tip of your diamond bit to see if it shows signs of overheating. If you notice the tip of your bit is dark brown, black or even yellow you need to slow your drilling speed a little, apply less downward pressure and be sure that the cutting edge of your holesaw is in water. Diamond drills bits can heat up very fast and lose their diamond segmentation. Whenever you are using any kind of diamond cutting tools you need to remember to use light drilling pressure and lots of water.

You can use a handheld cordless or electric drill motor. If you are drilling lots of wine bottles you may want to invest in a small table top drill press. The problem that you may encounter is starting the hole. The diamond drill bit will want to dance and skip around the bottle surface. It is sometime a little difficult to get the diamond bit to bite. You can try using a strip of duck tape. Wrap it around the bottle and mark the spot where you want to drill the hole. Start very slow and apply enough pressure so that the bit will start to cut. When using a hand held drill motor you should start the hole by tipping your bit at about a 45 degree angle to the bottle. When you have made a slight indentation in the glass, you can than bring your drill motor straight up and apply light downward pressure. You can see and feel the drill bit start to cut the glass. You will also see some very fine powder on the edge of your diamond bit.

Lubricants: Use just plain water. I read that some bottle drillers have tried WD-40 or some other oil. I have not tried either one. It is my understanding that oil lubricants should not be used with diamond drill bits. You can apply water to the cutting edge of you diamond bit by spraying it from a squirt bottle. This is often difficult because it is hard to hold your wine bottle with one hand and holding your drill motor with the other. I have a better way to keep the edge of your diamond drill bit wet during the time you are drilling. Remember it is very important to always keep the cutting edge of your hole saw /diamond drill bit in water. Try this. Make a small donut out of putty. I use Silly Putty. The hole in the donut needs to be just a little larger than the circumference of the size of the diamond drill bit. Make it about half an inch high. You can lay your bottle on an old towel and place between your feet. Fill this little donut with water. Bend directly over the bottle and carefully start to drill your hole.  Start your cut by holding your drill motor at a slight angle. Lift your drill up and down just a little. A touch n’ go is a technique that you should use. If you were to drill with a steady downward pressure water may not seep into the hole. Pumping your drill up and down is one of the critical techniques. You will get the feel for this as you gain experience.  Buying a small table top drill press and making a bottle cradle or jig makes drilling wine bottle a little easier.
